Tiny Home- "The Ski House"

The 'Ski House' is one of the four homes on our property. This is the cutest tiny home I've ever seen! One thing that makes it so cool is that it dates back to the early 1900s or late 1800s. We've gathered a little information from the neighbors, but most of the information about it is long lost.

What we do know about the home, is that it use to be a gas station right up the street from our current house. It was moved onto the property in the 1960s. Like everything else on the property, time took a harsh beating on it. The original owner of our property was a "collector."  My husband and I think he used it as his tool shed. The property was a farm and he fixed appliances as one of his many jobs. He collected a lot of stuff! A root cellar was right in front of the home with a lot of old canning supplies still in it. My aunt came over one day. She grew up and lived her adult life in the area. She was well familiar with this tiny house. She believes that my great grandparents and their 9 children lived in it for a summer, prior to it becoming a gas station. It was during the depression era when my great grandfather was between jobs. The farmer had the tiny home on his land. He offered to let them stay in it until they found better accommodations. She mentioned the kids sleeping outside in the grass fields. They must have used the inside as their small living quarters. Pretty cool and kind-of freaky! Can you imagine buying a home that your grandparents lived in almost 85 years before and not even know it? Crazy!!!

The architecture on the exterior of the home is absolutely beautiful! We tried to keep the original look the best we could. The original light is still hanging above the door. We chose to do the exterior with weathered wood from a picket fence that was surrounding a garden area around part of our yard. When building, we try to use whatever we can to give a unique look and minimize waste. We also like to do things on a budget. The footprint of the home is 120 square feet. We put a loft above, making it about 225 square feet. Every square inch was thought out to really help maximize the space. We put several large windows in the house, including sky light's that open to help get as much natural light and air flow as possible. The loft has a diamond-shaped window with unobstructed views of a beautiful mountain range.

We took out the root cellar and replaced it with a patio made of bowling floors. It gives it almost a zen-like feel. My husband got them for free when a local bowling alley was being torn down. Bonus for us! Who else has a bowling floor patio? Especially for FREE! We have a few trees surrounding, but the finishing touches still need to be completed. That will be a project for fall 2020. Then the property will be complete!

You are probably wondering why we call it the ski house. When my husband first saw the property, he thought it looked like a ski chalet. What a perfect place to rent out to skiers when they come into town! Below are some pics of the home with a little more detail about it.

Isn't it cute? I love the corrugated metal with dark, aged wood trim. The purple door gives the home the perfect splash of color, while the antique light makes it shine! We are super happy with how this turned out!

As you walk in, this is what you see. Sooo much cupboard space!

Yes, that is a dishwasher! Who has time to wash dishes? You should be out having an adventure!

Another shot of the kitchen.

Windows, windows, windows. Where there was a wall, we put one.

The bathroom and shower are open. The shelves behind the sink are the perfect place to store your bathroom towels and supplies, without worrying about getting them wet when you shower. I wasn't going to waste 6 inches of space!

Pretty decent shower space for a tiny home, right? There's definately space for two.

This is the view from the loft. The window has an unobstructed view of a very beautiful mountain range.

In the loft, is a queen size bed with two sky lights that open. There's quite a bit of floor space for personal items. The perfect place to rest your head after a long day of hopefully having fun!

These are the bowling floors that I was talking about. Aren't they awesome? This is right outside the front door of the ski house. It's a great place to have a morning cup of coffee or to get your zen. We put lots of trees and plants around the ski house and this area. As they grow, it'll be it's very on sanctuary.
