The Compound
I currently live on a unique property with two small homes, one medium home and one tiny home. The entire property went from blah to bling! Here is the story.
A little history of my current property. It used to be a farm. The home and land were subdivided and sold. The property included a farmhouse with one other home and two unique structures on approximately 0.4 acres of land. We have names for each of them; The Main House, The Apartment, The Cottage, and The Ski House. The entire property suffered from severe neglect and lack of care for over a decade.
My husband and I pride ourselves on not gutting everything and throwing it in the landfill. Everything that could be salvaged was used in the homes or given to people who would use them. We honestly interviewed people who wanted the antique windows, doors, hinges, multiple 1950 appliances, water barrels and pretty much anything else that you can think of (not kidding). We also believe in maintaining the original architecture of the home as much as possible. We were mindful of the cost and tried to be as creative as possible to help it stay budget-friendly. Every inch of space was thought about and maximized.
Our yard is a whole other story! To keep it simple, most people would've bulldozed the entire property. At times, I felt it would've been easier. Being raised with a love of plants and trees, I saw the vision of what it could be. With the help of dozens of large dumpsters and endless hours, the property is almost complete. The yard is sectioned into several areas making each home feel like it's own private living area. Most of the property is trees, bushes, and other plants. We only have about 10% grass for our dogs to run around on. We also have a simple garden that holds all our herbs and veggies. We refuse to put any form of toxins on our property and consider the entire property to be organic. We try to compost and have multiple, natural shelters to encourage birds to come live in our yard. I honestly feel our home sounds like we are in Hawaii.
